Colorado's deer populations have shown temendous increase in the past two years. Those great 26"-30" bucks are once again showing up in large numbers. Our specific hunt area produced some great bucks this past season. The remoteness our hunt area is a big factor with providing these bucks with great habitat. Currently all deer licenses are on a draw only system. You must apply and draw a deer tag to hunt all Colorado deer. No over the counter tags are available. There are no deer tags at all for the first rifle elk season. The first combined rifle deer/elk season hunters drew about 80% deer tags with no preference points. The second combined rifle season was 30% draw with no preference points, 50% with one point and 80% with two points. Our average harvest on bucks was the 22" - 30" class. Patience awarded those hunters with the bigger bucks.
The Colorado muzzleloader deer/elk season is generally mid-September. The elk rut is on at this time making the bulls less cautious. We will use bugles and cow calls to help bring the animals into shooting range. Average shoots are 70 yards. Our hunter success runs very high on this hunt.
All licenses by draw only. One-two preference points to draw this tag. An exciting hunt as the bull elk are in rut at this time and may be called in to the hunter. Lack of a lot of water in our area makes the herds congregate at our springs and tanks. Setting up at these water areas makes for daily opportunities. We usually see about an 80% harvest on mature bulls on this hunt.
